Packing Tips
- Use boxes with secure lids for stability and for more
efficient loading onto the moving van. Moving companies sell
boxes and packing materials if needed.
- Use towels and linens to wrap or cushion fragile items.
- Wrap delicate items individually. For a very fragile item,
wrap it, then place in box, and then pack the box inside another
box with more cushioning.
- Use crumpled paper to pad the top, bottom, and sides of boxes
for extra cushioning. Newspaper ink will smear, so do not use it
to wrap hard-to-clean items
- Consider having a professional packing and shipping company
handle your most delicate items, such as fragile antiques,
crystal, pictures with glass, mirrors, and precious figurines.
- Have things you may want first, when the van arrives at your
new home, placed near the doors of the moving van, such as small
tools, cleaning equipment (buckets, cloths), etc.
- >Label each box with the contents and the room they will belong
in. Mark on all sides of the box. Write FRAGILE in large letters
when appropriate.
- Encourage children to pack their own things, and to mark the
boxes with their own names and the contents. They will enjoy being
part of the moving process.
- Wrap plates and saucers individually. Place on their rims
rather than laying them flat.
- Glasses and cups should be wrapped separately and placed rim
down.
- Do not move flammable materials, aerosols, solvents,
cleaning products, bleach, insecticides, motor oil, or gasoline.
The heat in a moving van could ignite them.
Securely close medicines, makeup, toiletries, etc. Pack in
separate boxes to avoid leakage on other items.
