Planning Your Move
Three to six weeks before the move:
- Give you and your family plenty of time to prepare so
that last minute rushing and stress are at a minimum.
- Arrange to have insurance coverage transferred, make any changes in
coverage.
- Notify of your change of address: credit cards and magazine
subscriptions.
- Check on refunds from utility deposits.
- Have your bank assist in transferring funds and providing credit
references at your new location.
- Obtain records from doctors, dentists, optometrist, schools,
veterinarian, and birth and baptism records.
- Return items borrowed, collect things borrowed from you. Return
library materials. For things you will not take with you, give them
to friends, have a garage sale, or donate them to charity.
- Plan for the transfer of pets, or allow time to find a good home for
them.
- Have car checked to avoid problems during the move.
- Select a moving company that can handle special items, such as a piano,
if needed. Arrange for transferring cars, motorcycles, and boats.
One week before the move:
- Make sure to have prescriptions filled to last until settled.
- Notify post office of change of address.
- Cancel gas, water, electricity, telephone, cable, garbage pick-up, newspapers, delivery services. Arrange to have these services started in your new location. Take care of any deposits necessary.
- Make sure you have enough cash or travelers checks to cover your expenses until your new banking services are complete.
- Dispose of combustibles and spray cans, drain boats and power mowers of gasoline and oil.
- Check with your Realtor to make sure you have all necessary materials and funds for the closing on your home.
- Inventory furniture for scratches and dents, provide a copy for the movers.
The day of the move:
- Provide movers with your list of furniture dents and scratches, make sure you both agree on it. Provide driver with phone numbers where you can be reached, if needed. Verify the delivery address and scheduled delivery date with the driver. Approve and sign the Bill of Lading.
- Make one last, thorough check of every room and closet in the house, and the storage buildings and grounds outside.
- Leave house keys with neighbor or your Realtor.
- Make sure your family or close friends know your route, schedule, and the numbers where you can be reached until you are settled.
Settling into your new home:
- Check on utilities and other necessary services. Resume newspapers, cable, etc.
- Notify post office that you are at your new address, pick up any mail being held.
- Register your car with the Department of Motor Vehicles as soon as possible. There may be a deadline for this. Register motorcycles and boats, and check on other licensing regulations
- Register your children in school, obtain inoculations, health records, etc., necessary for enrollment.
- Register to vote at city offices.
- Check pilot light on stove, check furnace and water heater, have other appliances checked.
